WATCH: HaRav Bergman: “For A Bochur, Even 1 Day In The Army Is Shmad”

HaGaon HaRav Bergman

HaGaon HaRav Meir Tzvi Bergman spoke about Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s announcement earlier this week that the IDF will begin sending draft notices to thousands of bnei yeshivos.

Speaking at a Shuvu event held in his home, the Rosh Yeshivah said: ” Everyone knows that for a bochur to be in the army for even one day is mamash Shmad. The entire battle now is a battle for the Melech, for Hakadosh Baruch Hu.”

“We need to know now that it’s forbidden to cooperate with them. One fool [referring to Gallant] comes along and sends drafts orders. We’ve already said several times that we’re obligated to be moser nefesh for this.”

HaRav Bergman has said more than once that his father-in-law, HaGaon HaRav Elazar Menachem Shach, z’tl, told him that if it becomes relevant –  to publicize to the public in his name that the gezeirah of the recruitment of bnei hayeshivos is a gezeiras shmad [שמד] and it’s necessary to be moser nefesh for it like it’s explained in the Shulchan Orech Yoreh De’ah.

“And therefore, if we are tested in this, we must oppose it with all our strength, to the point of mesirus nefesh,” HaRav Bergman said in the name of HaRav Shach, z’tl.

  1. Why are none of the gedolim talking about the non yeshiva bochurim? The working people, or the kids on Ben Yehuda who are unrecognizable as chareidim unless you knew their father personally? It feels like it’s all a big strawman, to say that the IDF is drafting yeshiva bochurim. I’m sure those orders have come through, but only long after the unwillingness of the chareidi community to admit that not literally everyone is being meimis atzmo al hatorah.

  2. It looks like all the Gedolei Yisroel today are taking the Peleg Yerushalmi position that it is forbidden to cooperate or even respond to any military draft notices.

  3. The tziyoinim can go sacrifice themselves as worthless cannon fodder on the altar of the Zionist Molech as per their avoda Zoro and kefira that they so much believe in.

    We will abstain, thank you.

  4. calling it a gzeiras shmad doesn’t actually make it a gzeiras shmad.
Concerns about equality and sharing the burden is not a gzeiras shmad.
And besides, going to jail under the authority of secular wardens isn’t less of a shmad than going to the military under the authority of religious generals. The only way to be moser nefesh is to resist arrest at the risk of getting killed.

  5. The next few week should be interesting.

SA Yoreh Dea indeed says full time learners are exempt from city watch duty.
What Yeshiva Torah protection do we have on bein hazmanim?

  6. BY1212 unless you have a magical set of seforim that are bullet proof or knife proof I advise you just say thank you to the boys who are protecting you and your family from the Jew killing Arabs instead of making fun of other Jews.

  7. Dear NaNachIsntBreslov,
The rabanim are talking about them and the factual reason for why the rabbanim are against the draft even for boys in ben Yehuda is because when you have hundreds and thousands of chareidy boys walking around Israel in there uniforms it will attract yeshiva bochurim that are being meimis atzmo al hatorah, and that can’t happen!

  8. @BY1212 – as the parent of several sons, all Bnei Torah, currently serving in the army protecting ingrates like you, I am not mochel on their Kavod. Think very carefully about how you can apologize, or you WILL have to answer for it after 120.

    an Israeli Yid

  9. To everyone offended by BY1212’s comment:

    Don’t be.

He’s no doubt a troll, who doesnt actually believe anything he wrote, and is just nebach a bored guy seeking attention and getting it in the form of your angry responses.

  10. I find myself confused by the words the Roshei Hayeshiva are using. Either it is an exaggeration as we sometimes see in Chazal or they aren’t exposed to the thousands of Bnei Torah from the Daati Leumi (like my sons) who have figured out how to serve and not become Christians (which is what shmad means) or they lack faith in their own Chinuch system. Can anyone help me out here?

  11. @shpitzbochur If a bochur can be meimis atzmo al hatorah and then say “hey I’m gonna drop all this and go join the army” just because he sees a soldier in shul then his hashkafos are so weak that these rabbonim need to be taken to task for terrible chinuch. No, I actually think that that’s not the reason altogether, as much as it keeps being repeated. I think that’s a smokescreen.

  12. There are several rabbonim who either deliberately, or out of ignorance, are undercutting the message of the gadolim by insisting that even the thousands of draft-age bochurim who are hanging out in the coffee shops and have no interest in serious learning should be entitled to continue hanging out while others go off to die defending them and their families. That type of political stupidity ensures that the 85% of non Chareidi citizens of EY will be even more opposed to any legislative fix to the Supreme Court directives.

  13. a shmad like in the shulchan aruch there was a time in history when jewish people killed they’re own family not to do avoda zarah this was in Spain France ask him if it’s permitted to finish the state israel like go to palestine

  14. Kudos to Rav Burgman. Of course its a גזירת השמד but thats an old one.
Not toooooo little and never tooooo late.
And NO offense to BY1212 said, but EVERY word holds true ++++++++ a lot more.

  15. I’m a little confused. They’re m’chuyav to be moser nefesh but they’re crying that the govt took away money for kollelim? Where’s the mesirus nefesh???

  16. I would not be surprised at all, if we research those articles of those people who dressed up like Chassidim and they went to Iran and they are always protesting together with Hamas, probably BY1212 wrote nice positive comments about those guys who went to Iran. We can assume that he belongs to that group.

  17. anIsraeliYid: I hope your sons do teshuva and burn their IDF uniforms. As a responsible parent, you should guide them and help them.

aml: more likely you are not exposed to the majority of former yeshiva bachurs from the dati leumi that go OTD in the army. Yes, there are thousands that remain yirei shamayim even after they leave the IDF, but there are thousands more that throw away their kipa. Should you take a 50/50 chance on your children? Also, are you being purposefully obtuse with your words? Shmad doesn’t only mean becoming a Christian, it can also mean becoming a Muslim, or a Buddhist, or just a mehalel shabbos.

JustARegularJew: If someone is m’chuyav to be moser nefesh, that doesn’t give you the right to hurt them. It’s not difficult.

For balance, I also want to point out that Zionism is wrong, but not idol worship as idol worship requires a supernatural entity to be worshiped in a defined physical way.

  18. They’re m’chuyav to be moser nefesh but they’re crying that the govt took away money for kollelim? Where’s the mesirus nefesh???

It is a considerable burden and inconvenience for chashuvah rabbonim to have to get on the private jets donated by their wealthy supporters and fly off to the U.S. and Europe every several months to schneur money to subsidize their kollelim. That is true mesirus nefesh. Alternatively, they could negotiate some long-term compromise plan with the government involving alternative forms of IDF or public service and have the stipends restored for those participating in the new service arrangements. I doubt their is political support, even among the Likud-led coaltion, to revert to the old arrangements.

  19. anIsraeliZionist:
May Hashem keep them safe, including from the Zionist shmad to which you seem to have no problem to them being subjected by the Zionists in their shmad army.

  20. doom777:
Where in hilchos avoda zara does that definition appear? Zionism is very much avoda zara, as per all the gedolim and as per the Torah’s actual definition of avoda zara.

  21. Medinah docheh kol Hatorah kula
    Tzahal doche kol Hatorah kula
Yishuv eretz Yisroel doche kol Hatorah kula

    That is called avoda zarah

    Reishit tzmichat galuteinu? Meyheyche teyse
