Counter-Terrorism Officials Want Sinai Crossing Closed

ter2.jpgCounter-terrorism officials in Israel are seeking the legal means to close the Taba Crossing to prevent Israelis from crossing into Sinai due to the ominous credible terror alerts for that location. Officials lament the indifference on the part of Israelis planning to visit Sinai, who continue to cross the border daily, seemingly unaware or unconcerned despite the ferocity of warnings.

Counter-terrorism bureau officials are even investigating the ramifications of activating emergency measures to shut the border crossing, stressing Israelis traveling to Sinai are in real danger, especially as Rosh Hashanah draws near.

Peace agreements signed with Egypt prohibit total closure of the border, compelling officials today to seek an acceptable legal means to close the gateway to Sinai.

The terror warnings are many and credible officials warn, explaining the terrorists plan to abduct Israelis from the Sinai area, along the coast, and then take them to Gaza. There are increasing dangers for those visiting secluded areas, where it would be easier to abduct them even in broad daylight.

The profile being discussed according to Israeli officials of the “ideal hostage” is an Israeli soldier on leave, 20-30, preferably someone serving in a combat or even an elite unit. It is unclear they admit if terrorists are eyeing individuals or even groups of youths traveling together.

A successful abduction would increase Hamas’ ability to make demands for the release of additional terrorists by Israel, as well as raising the ante for the release of Gilad Shalit.
