Critical Shortage of Anesthesia Drug in Israeli Hospitals

Health Ministry officials are confirming the reported critical shortage of the drug Fentanyl, an extremely potent analgesic agent used as part of the process of anesthetizing a patient for surgery.

Health officials are not really explaining what has caused the shortage, but it appears for the past six months, the nationwide supply has been slowly and steadily dwindling, reaching today’s situation in which some hospitals are already using emergency supplies while others have exhausted their supply. Reports state that there is a pharmaceutical substitute, but its prohibitive cost does not make it a viable option for most hospitals.

Health Ministry officials report that the manufacturer and the importer are working on a solution. A timetable or explanation is not forthcoming at this time.
