Israel: Commuters Turn to the Court for Justice – Checkpoint Delays Intolerable

Navon Bar, a resident of Yishuv Adam in the Benjamin Regional Council of Shomron has had enough and has decided to take action. Navon has filed a lawsuit against the commander of the Jerusalem Envelope Deputy Superintendent Nissim Edri, Jerusalem Police Chief Aaron Franco, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Public Security Minister Avi Dichter and Benjamin Council head Avi Ro’eh.

The lawsuit states that tens of thousands of regional council residents and travelers are compelled to wait 40-70 minutes at the crossing station between Shomron and northern Jerusalem every morning. Many are traveling to work, school, or to doctors appointments and this is the only access road into the capital available to motorists and bus passengers.

“At the Hizme Checkpoint there are three lanes and 20 soldiers and civilian guards. Every lane is manned by four female soldiers, a male soldier and two security guards. Most of the time, only one lane is operational while others stand around. A second lane may be opened when the screaming and complaining begins. Of late, operational exercises and briefings are held during the rush hour, further complicating the situation. Higher-ranking officers appear to have been unaware and when they learned of the situation, they ordered lanes opened.”

He points to Highway 443, the Jerusalem-Modi’in Highway as an example, where there are more cars during the rush hour but motorists pass through at a reasonable speed. He insists the delays are not security related but bureaucratic and there is no justification for motorists to endure the long wait on a regular basis.

He is seeking NIS 16,000 in compensation and he hopes that if the court accepts his suit, thousands of others will join in.

Police, border police, the IDF and the Defense Ministry have all declined comment, indicating they will file their response with the court after studying the suit.

  1. or perhaps the powers that be are trying to tell
them that living in the West Bank is against government policy, and hopes that increased harassment will encourage them move “back” to within the pre-1967 borders that Israel’s democratically elected rulers intend as the maximum extent of the post-zionist states

  2. Re: Obama and Biden.

All of you people here are bigots and racists and KKK in your own various masks, no matter your race, religious affiliation. Who the hell cares whether Obama is muslim or Biden who is Catholic and you think he is cristian? What difference does it make if one is African, Muslim, Christian, Jewish as long as you uphold The Constitution of the United States? You all make me sick to my stomach!
