Lebanon: Two Mossad Agents in Custody

ywnisrael1.jpgAccording to reports from Lebanon, two men, reportedly Mossad agents, are in custody, stating the two have been involved in intelligence-gathering since the 1980s, adding they played a hand in the February 2008 assassination of Hizbullah’s Imad Mughniyeh. The report states they have extracted confessions from the Israeli agents.

According to the Lebanese daily A-Safir, the two were taken into custody in the western Bekaa Valley area. When taken into custody, the two had advanced surveillance equipment in their possession, including cameras and audio recording devices. The Saturday edition of the newspaper quotes an eyewitness who saw Lebanese forces raid the home of a senior cell leader, confiscating the equipment.

The report adds the two carried out surveillance of Hizbullah and Lebanese Army facilities in the Bekaa Valley area, reporting to their handlers regarding movements of Lebanese politicians who crossed the border into Syria.

According to the report, quoting a senior Lebanese military source, this is the second time in as many years that they uncovered an Israeli spy cell.

A-Safir adds the two are Lebanese residents, but it remains unclear if they are citizens. The senior of the two in custody has been operating since the 1980s and has molded contacts with senior Lebanese and Hizbullah officials.
