FUEL CRISIS LOOMS: Jet Fuel Prices Double As Airlines Warn Of Shortages

Jet fuel prices in the U.S. have surged dramatically in recent weeks, raising fears of supply shortages, higher ticket prices, and potential flight cancellations.

According to the Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index, prices have jumped from roughly $2.17 to $4.57 per gallon as Middle East tensions disrupt supply chains.

Airlines are already reacting. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said the carrier will cut about 5% of planned flights in the near term, warning that sustained prices could add as much as $11 billion annually in fuel costs.

Industry experts say inventories could run dangerously low within weeks, as jet fuel—already a volatile and tightly supplied commodity—faces further strain.

The Middle East supplies roughly 15–17% of global jet fuel, much of it passing through the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker traffic has slowed sharply amid escalating tensions.
