Shalits Begin the Race Against the Clock

gilad2.jpgBeing of the opinion that once the current administration steps down the chances of obtaining their son’s release will diminish significantly, Noam and Aviva Shalit, Gilad’s parents, on Sunday moved to a protest tent in Jerusalem, opposite the Prime Minister’s Residence.

Gilad was taken captive by Hamas terrorists on June 25, 2006 during a cross-border attack at Kerem Shalom. Since then, no one has been permitted to visit with him, not even representatives of the International Red Cross. Now, 987 days later, with the current government in its final days, the Shalits have decided they must do something to increase the pressure on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, fearing after he leaves office; the chances of cutting a deal for Gilad’s release will significantly diminish and he may chas v’sholom become another Ron Arad.

“Until now, the prime minister has repeatedly told us what not to do. The time has come to say what should be done” stated the Shalits – with their faces telling the entire story, their mounting concerns accompanied by efforts to fight off despair, to remain optimistic despite the difficult situation. “The time has come to respond with actions, not words,” stated Mr. Shalit.

Joining Gilad’s parents will be many family members and friends, including Tzvi Shalit, an 80-year-old grandfather.

“I demand the government of Israel, which sent Gilad on his mission almost three years ago, at the start of the government’s tenure, make certain to return him home prior to stepping down, before it is too late,” stated Noam Shalit.”
