Anti-Aircraft Missiles Arrive in Syria

p1.jpgAccording to Russia’s Interfax news agency, the first shipment of advanced Pantsir S1 anti-aircraft missiles have been delivered to Syria in a major deal between the two countries. Syria has ordered 36 missile batteries from the Russians. The deal was signed a number of years ago, valued at $700 million.

Following the publication of the missiles arriving in Syria, possibly intended for Iran, there is growing speculation that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s disappearance for 12 hours was indeed related to a flight to Russia. Russia has promised Israel that Moscow would not sell any weapons to Israel’s neighbors in the region that would alter the balance of power but the S1 missiles definitely represents a shift in the balance of power, placing the advanced weapons in the hands of Israel’s enemies, a system that would complicate any Israeli offensive against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Israeli military officials, current and retired, over recent months explained if Syria and/or Iran got hold of the advanced anti-aircraft system it would make an offensive against Iran significantly more complicated, but added “not undoable,” stating the air force has a response to the S1 system too.
