Slonim Rebbe Declines Council of Torah Sages Offer

Askanim approached the Slonim Rebbe Shlita to persuade him to join the Council of Torah Sages, but the Rebbe declined.

According to a report published by the Hebrew Mishpacha, the Rebbe explained he cannot join a body that his father resigned from, referring his father’s decision to resign from the council in 5744.

The Rebbe added there is a small group which does not adhere to the council’s rulings, giving an example to strengthen his position, that prior to the elections he was approached to sign the standard kol korei to call on voters to vote Gimmel. He responded with a stipulation, that MKs first affix their signatures, pointing out he wished to confirm they are willing to commit to following the instructions of gedolei yisrael. The MKs complied, one after another, with the Rebbe then explaining that he can still be of assistance when called to assist, without becoming a member of the council.

The Rebbe added that today, the chareidi community has three newspapers, and each operates “on the back of the other”, adding there is no other community with three newspapers. The Rebbe is quoted as saying that when this situation ceases to exist, he might reconsider joining the council.

  1. Beautiful!

    What a Kiddush Hashem!

The Slonimer Rebbe knows that for anything to succeed and in order to see any bracha come out of one’s hands, there must be shalom and achdus. When different people run “on the backs of others”, it’s a tremendous kitrug.

  2. Can someone add background on this Council of Torah Sages? Also, of what relevance is the newspaper situation to whether he is on the Council or not? What does “on the back of” mean here? Sorry, but this item is quite unclear.

  3. To no 3.How absurd a question. There is only one mainstream Slonimer Rebbe who was for 40 years Rosh Yeshiva before becoming Rebbe taking the place of his revered father the Great NESIVOS SHOLOM ZTL.

  4. From the beginning of the State of Israel it was the decision of the Moetzes to have Agudah members elected to the Knesset and be involved in the governmental affairs. The rationale was that more could be accomplished inside than outside. Although I bow to daas torah which the Slonimer Rebbe Shlita definitely is, the Gerrer Rebbe Shlita is also daas Torah, as were his father and grandfather and uncles, and they also knew of the problems and still remained within the Moetzes. Maybe the Slonimer Rebbe could do more inside than just giving criticism on the outside.
