DM Barak Cowers Up to UN Secretary-General Moon

barak.jpgIn his infinite wisdom, Defense Minister Ehud Barak telephoned UN Secretary-General Bank ki-Moon, one of Israel’s most outspoken opponents, calling upon him to assist in wooing the PA (Palestinian Authority) back to the negotiating table.

Seeking to promote his own standing, Barak explained to Moon that he wishes to curtail the negotiating process, which based on Barak’s past experience as prime minister translates to giving away the country, making additional concessions.

The UN leader has been among Israel’s harshest critics regarding the ongoing embargo on Hamas-controlled Gaza, accusing Israel of human rights violations and violating international law. Barak used the conversation to assure the UN leader that Israel is concerned with and is tending to the humanitarian needs of Gaza residents.

Earlier in the day, Barak met with Quartet Mideast envoy Tony Blair, using the opportunity to call on Blair to increase the EU’s involvement in Mideast peace-making efforts.

  1. What exactly is “cowers up”? I have never seen “cowers” followed by “up”. “Cower” means “to shrink away…from something that menaces…”, So “cowers up” seems to be a rather questionable usage of those two words.

Also, that headline contradicts the article: Mr. Barak took action and called Mr. Ban, which means Barak did NOT shrink away from Ban.

And his name is “Ban”, not “Bank”, Ki Moon.

I understand this is not the Wall Street Journal or Washington Post, but please try to do better than this.

  2. Just how is it “cowering” to ask a powerful official for support? The article talks about Ban’s previous behavior, but it says nothing at all about Mr. Barak’s conversation with him that could be construed as “cowering”. Even the Defense Minister of Israel is entitled to a presumption of innocence until evidence of “guilt” is produced . . .
