Bill Moving Ahead to Halt Racism

A bill in response to the recent wave of anti-chareidi statements released by public officials will be placed on the desk of Knesset secretariat, a bill dubbed the Gazit-Huldai Bill. The bill is not sponsored by Yahadut HaTorah, but by MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari of the Yisrael Beitenu opposition party.

The bill seeks to amend the current law which defines racism regarding remarks targeting one’s nationality, seeking to add derogatory statements targeting one’s religion, religious persuasion, geographical location and ethnic group, making such statements a crime under the penal code.

The bill was prompted by recent vehement anti-chareidi remarks released by radio host Gabi Gazit and Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai .

  1. I don’t like “hate crimes” laws, because they do not stop hatred, and can be applied very unequally.

But of you are going to have them anyway, this particular one would be a good one (at least better then many of those already on the books).
