Third Hiker in Eretz Yisroel R”L Dies in Nachal – Gedolim Issue Kol Koreh Forbidding Hiking!

mada5.jpgA 50 year-old French tourist hiking in Nachal Dovid, R”L died of heat stroke after losing consciousness from dehydration on Sunday. Magen David Adom Medics airlifted him to a nearby hospital, but resuscitation efforts unfortunantly failed. In another incident, four hikers were evacuated by helicopter after suffering severe dehydration in Nachal Amud (in the Golan); and transported to a local hospital. They are reported to be in stable condition.

A Kol Koreh signed by Hagoen Rav Eliyashiv Shlita & Hagoen Rav Shteinman Shlita – which is expected to be released shortly – begs all Yeshiva Bochrim who are anxious to utilize their Bain Hazmanim, not to go hiking in the current heat wave.

“Don’t be tempted to hike because it’s Pikuach Nefoshos Mamesh,”  the Kol Koreh reads. “This is just the beginning of the vacation and two yeshiva students have already shortened their lives.”

Hatzolah Israel also released a statement on Erev Shabbos – after the second tragic death – urging all Yeshiva Bochrim not to go hiking in the sweltering heat which has swept across parts of Eretz Yisroel.

  1. All hiking should stop till this heat wave is over. the heat this past week is unbearable
All yeshiva boys should stay in yeshiva where there is air conditioning.

  2. Re: SYMCL

You can’t ask Bochrim to stay in Yeshivah during Bein Hazmanim (a time meant to recharge), rather they should be carefull not to go anywhere outdoors…

  3. noitallmr
im also a yeshiva man in e.y. and was in tel aviv and bnay brak today and almost dehidrated
    mostly in doors
the wether is just very very hot this week so stay in doors

  4. I imagine there are other ways of exercising that can be done more safely in extreme heat. No need to stay inside the holy Yeshiva walls simply because of a heat wave.

  5. THE TRUTH IS MORE YESHIVOS IN ERETZ YISROEL SHOULD HAVE A STRUCTURED BEIN HAZMANIM PROGRAM LIKE THE MIR AND OTHER YESHIVOS DO. THIS WOULD AVOID ALL PROBLEMS OF PIKUEACH NEFESH AND THE LIKE

  6. They don’t need structured programs, Bein Hazmanim is supposed to be fun and spontanious and it gives bochurim a chance to rent cars, kick back and have fun its part of the Eretz Yisroel growing experience… They just need them to be more understanding of what a heat wave is. Don’t blow this issue up to start cancelling their trips and making them stay in yerushalayim!
