A group of House Republicans joined Democrats to support shielding more than 350,000 Haitian nationals from deportation by extending Temporary Protected Status for another three years.
• The vote marked a rare rebuke of President Trump, as several GOP lawmakers from districts with large Haitian communities backed the effort.
• TPS allows foreign nationals from countries facing crises to live and work temporarily in the U.S., but does not provide a path to citizenship.
• The measure is largely symbolic for now, as the Senate is not expected to advance it and Trump would almost certainly veto any TPS extension bill that reached his desk.
