Progressive candidate Analilia Mejia won the New Jersey special election for the U.S. House, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway and keeping the 11th District out of GOP hands.

Mejia is backed by Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Elizabeth Warren, and campaigned on populist economic policies while calling to abolish ICE.

The district, once a Republican stronghold, has moved increasingly left in recent years and was previously held by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

Mejia has also said she agrees that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, underscoring a hardline anti-Israel stance.
