The World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, its highest alert level.
• WHO said the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or treatment, and may have spread undetected for weeks.
• The declaration followed confirmed cases in Kampala, Uganda, and Kinshasa, Congo, raising fears over cross-border spread and the true scale of the outbreak.
• Health officials reported 8 confirmed cases, 336 suspected infections and 87 suspected deaths in Congo’s Ituri province, while WHO warned the outbreak could be larger than reported.
