NYC Agrees To Settle NYPD Pension Lawsuit

nypd2New York City has agreed to settle a lawsuit over pensions for police officers and other municipal employees serving in the military.

The settlement with the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan was filed Monday, following months of negotiations. It still requires a judge’s approval.

A lawsuit had accused the city of improperly withholding some pension benefits for police officers called to active military service after Sept. 11, 2001.

The New York Times says the settlement also would affect firefighters, teachers and other city employees.

The suit said the city did not take into consideration the overtime, night differentials and other increased earnings that the employees might have earned.

The number of workers affected and the amount of money they could receive is not immediately clear.
