Toronto – The search for Eli Horowitz continues


issaclieder1.jpgThe search continues in Lake Nippising, Toronto for Eli Horowitz who went missing while on a fishing trip on August 21st. The body of his father-in-law (Heine Mondrowitz) was found a week ago after washing up on shore.? Rabbi Issac Leader (of Search & Rescue, NY) along with? divers, boats,? dogs, helicopters, jetskies & airplanes are continuing on the desperate search.?

Rabbi Leider said a pathologist had advised the family and searchers that the body of Eli Horowitz, with a slim, athletic build, could rise to the surface in 14 days.

OPP scaled down their search efforts for the Labor Day weekend, with as many as 15 personnel involved most days last week, including helicopters, boats and a command post at the Waltonian Inn.

Rabbi Leider said the Jewish community will continue to look for Eli Horowitz until he is found and asked that those people who have boats and would like to help join them in the search.?

Toronto Hatzolah? has offered a $3,000 reward for anyone who finds the body and family and friends have spent more than $90,000 renting local aircraft and bringing in expert search volunteers to assist so far.

  1. At the expense of sounding callous, it it pretty obvious that this person is not alive. That being the case, the importance of finding his body is imperative, as otherwise his wife may remain an agunah for the rest of her life.

  2. I share your thought that it is important to find the man’s body. However I respectfully disagree with you on the reason — I don’t think the wife would be an agunah. That would be heaping injury upon injury on this poor woman, who lost both father and husband. She is still young.

    On this topic, I quote: “The Rabbis taught: ‘If he fell into a lion’s den, there is no need to [bring witnesses to] testify [that he is dead]'” (Babylonian Talmud, Yevamot 121a).

    As you say yourself, “it it pretty obvious that this person is not alive”.
