Saying that will anger the non-Orthodox, who actively opposed the holocaust from 1945 onwards. While the decisions of the non-orthodox to be deliberately uninvolved has been well documents for over generation, it isn’t something they like to discuss (and the people charged with lobbying the Americnas not to get involved, such as Stephen Wise, are still honored by them). Hikind should be more discrete.
Why should he be more discreet? They shouldn’t be held accountable for not caring?

The difference is that now we have lots of power and the power of media to make a bigger tumult and no one has fear anymore of revealing his Jewish identity and to prove it you can go to a second grade of the most modern Orthodox Yeshiva and almost every boy has a normal Jewish name

550,000 Jewish men and women served in the armed forces of the United States during Word War II! Risking their lives to fight fascism isn’t enough for you, Mr. Hikind?
– 11,000 American Jewish soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines were killed in World War II, including the Jewish commander of 3rd Armored Division in France, General Marice Rose, who was killed in action. Hikind’s comments mock their sacrifice.
– 60 percent of all Jewish physicians in the United States under 45 years of age served in the military during World War 2. Were they also slackers who twiddled their thumbs while Europe burned Mr. Hikind?
– The American JDC rescued 81,000 Jews, provided emergency aid, covered travel expenses, and secured visas. They charted ships and funded rescue missions and helped Jewish refuges in transit in more than 40 countries. How dare Hikind impugn the JDC and their noble work by suggesting their leaders, employees and volunteers weren’t doing their best or trying their hardest.
– On November 25, 1942 Rabbi Stephen Wise convened a press conference to announce “that he had learned through sources confirmed by the State Department that about half the estimated 4,000,000 Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe had been slain in an “extermination campaign.” (The next day the Times ran this headline: SLAIN POLISH JEWS PUT AT A MILLION; One-third of Number in Whole Country Said to Have Been Put to Death by Nazis ABATTOIR FOR DEPORTEES Mass Electrocutions, Killing by Injection of Air Bubbles Described in Reports.”] The Nov. 25 article quotes Wise as calling for a national day of fasting and mourning, Was this more of that famous indifference Mr. Hikind?
– In March 1943 Rabbi Stephen Wise, was a presiding officer at a rally at MSG attended by 21,000 people, including the governor, the archbishop of the NY diocese, and senator Robert Wagner. At the rally an 11-point plan was ratified and submitted to the president. Participating organizations included:
American Jewish Committee
American Jewish Congress
American Jewish Labor Comittee
Agudath Harabonim
Bnai Brith
Synagogue Council of America
World Jewish Congress
These American Jewish organizations rallied, protested, met with leaders, and begged for help. They also sent money and helped refugees resettle. Dov Hikind thinks he can wish them out of existence.
– In 1942, Wise went on a national tour to (quoting the New York Times of December 28, 1942) “organize and unify efforts for the relief of Jews in Axis dominated lands”
Hikind needs a history lesson!
Given that it is a bit late to do anything about the holocaust, going out of our way to antagonize the non-Orthodox Jews accomplished nothing. We have enough issues with them without taunting them. It is important to know that those who could have objected to and perhaps impaired the holocaust chose not to do (and with the release of intercepted Enigma transcripts, that’s hardly a state secret)- but overly reminding out “friends” just annoys them without benefit to us.
Times repeat themselves, we r living in the SELFIE GENERATION, no one cares too much about anyone else, Jew – NonJew.
I am pleased to see that commenter no. 6 criticized commenter no. 1 for gratuitously antagonizing non-Orthodox Jews. Commenter no. 1 alleges that non-Orthodox Jews were uninvolved in opposing the Holocaust, but commenter no. 6 advises against bringing up the subject and then repeats the allegation of commenter no. 1. Ask one Jew for his/her opinion, and if the Jew is akuperma, you get 2 answers.
While I have the utmost respect for Dov Hikind, commenter #5 crisisoftheweek is correct. American Jews were actively speaking out against the Nazi regime almost from the moment Hitler yemach shemo took power on January 30, 1933.
One example of such was an attempt to boycott the Nazi Olympics in 1936, but US Olympic Committee President Avery Brundage was a racist and anti-Semite who during the Olympics would remove two Jewish athletes, Sam Stoller and Marty Glickman, from a relay team in order to avoid embarrassing Hitler y”s when the Jews won gold medals.
(By the 1968 Olympic games, Brundage was President of the International Olympic Committee and a not very well know fact is that he was one of the targets of the controversial gloved-fist protests by Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the medal platform, which was supported by Australian Peter Norman, the third person on the platform.)
crisisoftheweek: Your sources of information at dated. Already by the 1980s, documents had come to light showing that Stephen Wise had in fact lobbied privately against America acting to rescue EuropeanJews, assuring President Roosevelt that his Jewish supporters didn’t want holocaust rescue to take away from prosecuting the war. People like Wise were concerned that the refugees would be either Orthodox or Socialist, and would disrupt the very assimlation-oriented American Jewish community, then dominated by Reform with the Conservatives as a junior partner, and Orthodox not really having a place at the table.
And you may not be aware of information released relatively recently proving that Allied intelligence (meaning the Allied leaders) had full knowledge of what was going on starting in 1940 at the latest. It was never a secret. When Roosevelt and Churchill sent Jewish refugees back to German lines, they knew they would be killed.
However there really isn’t any reason to remind the frei Jews of their leaders’s perfidious behavior.

Read David S. Wyman’s “Abandonment of the Jews” for the real story on Stephen Wise, the JDC and others.
Hikind was clearly not addressing those fighting in the military. He was addressing the fact that those back in the U.S. did little to nothing – and some, including Wise, were so eager to find favor with Roosevelt that they often harmed rescue efforts.
