Al Sharpton: Civil Disobedience Will Escalate If Zimmerman Remains Free

If George Zimmerman is not arrested in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin soon, the Rev. Al Sharpton will call for an escalation in peaceful civil disobedience and economic sanctions.

Sharpton would not say the efforts would be taken against the city of Sanford specifically, but he has been critical of the police department’s handling of the case.

Saturday’s scheduled 11 a.m. march from Crooms Academy of Information Technology to the Sanford Police Department headquarters was organized by National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Coordinators said people will be bused in from other states to participate.

The civil rights activist and syndicated television show host said he will elaborate on this plan Saturday.

“I will speak about how the National Action Network will move to the next level if Zimmerman isn’t arrested,” said Sharpton, who founded the Network. He added that it was the Martin family and lawyers who first asked him to get involved and nationalize this story.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson is also expected to participate in the event.

The case has ignited ire and debate across the nation, galvanizing thousands of Trayvon supporters to the streets and social media, donning hoodies and toting Skittles.

Sanford police this week released a video of a handcuffed George Zimmerman apparently showing no visible signs of physical injury after he claimed that he shot the 17-year-old Miami teenager in self-defense.

Zimmerman’s family have come to his defense on national news networks, releasing details about his version of what happened the night of Feb. 26 when police found the teen face down in wet grass.

Sharpton said the recent revelations only underscores the need for an immediate arrest and trial.

“Whether he [Zimmerman] had a swollen or broken nose, neither one means he had to take a 9mm and kill someone,” he said. “It’s not about saying Zimmerman is innocent or guilty, this is about whether there was probable cause to arrest him.”

He criticized the way authorities have released information about the case and said they are setting a harmful precedent, he said.

Sanford city officials announced several road closures in anticipation of the march including 13th street, from U.S. Highway 17-92 to Lake Avenue; as well as, Persimmon Street from McCracken Road to 13th.

The demonstration is expected to end at 2 p.m., organizers said.

  1. If the Democrats really believed in the ideas of justice, rule of law and democracy – Sharpton would be immediately arrested. But then again, Obama is more of a “democratic” in the sense that Stalin and Mao were – something we should be remembered when people like Hikind and Greenfield associate as “fellow travellers” with the Obama regime regime.

  2. I’d hope that the decision to arrest or indict the man would be based on evidence, not haw many people demonstrate asking that he be arrested. If that were the case I could probably gather hundreds or thousands who would demonstrate for Rev Al to be arrested for inciting to riot on several occaisons and for conspiracy in the Brawley event.

  3. listening to Al Sharpton would constitute a violation of the constitutioin. He has no evidence that Zimmerman is guilty, rather, he feels, let us emphasize, he FEELS, the Zimermann is guilty. A person must be proven guilty and the law does not recognize the feelings of people as evidence.

Perhaps the other way, Sharpton should be arrested for advocating violence.

  4. “Sanford police this week released a video of a handcuffed George Zimmerman apparently showing no visible signs of physical injury”

    This is a blatant lie.

What Sharpton is demanding is a crime. It is against the law to arrest someone when there is no probable cause to believe that they have committed a crime. Doing so is kidnapping, which is itself a crime. If Zimmerman were to be arrested in response to these demonstrations, he would have a clear civil rights case against whoever arrested him. Unfortunately I don’t think he’d have a case against Sharpton.

Akuperma, what exactly do you think Sharpton can be arrested for? He’s demanding that others to break the law, but I can’t think of any law that he himself is breaking.

  5. The day he and jesse jerkson paygiren vi ah hint will be a major holiday!

Obama, where are you now calling for “civility?” Have you no control over your goons?? Or, which is more likely the truth, you live for this stuff????

  6. Inciting to riot is a criminal offense and he should have already been arrest mr. big mouth. People remember if he is not arrest not to vote for people that support sharpton

  7. This Martin-Zimmerman situation is a home run for Al Sharpton. He feeds off of racial discord. If he were sincere it would be one thing , but his main objective is to get his face in front of the cameras, and the media just plays into his hands. Al is in it for Al …bottomline.
If this race hustler really cared cared for black youth he would do any and everything to help with the never ending cycle of black on black violence which is an almost daily occurence in urban America.
My thought is that the Obama re-election people are behind all of the demonstrations, as an attempt to draw attention away from far more serious issues that pplague America. Just where is the $$$ coming from to fund all of the signs and other things that go into making these protests happen???. The President already stuck his nose into something that is a local issue…he is shameless!

  8. Let’s also not forget there should be charges of TERRORISM leveled against the black panthers for the bounty they placed on Mr Zimmerman’s head AND Spike Lee for tweeting his supposed address.

Since US AG Holder is sitting on his hands he should be dragged into Congress for once again dropping the ball when it comes to investigating the panthers.

  9. Lazerc says “Sharpton should be arrested for advocating violence.” That is not a crime. Arresting him for it would be just as wrong as arresting Zimmerman.

Yaacov Doe and Yitzchoky suggest “inciting to riot”. But he hasn’t done that. There has been no riot resulting directly and immediately from his words, and the words can therefore not be presumed to have been calculated to produce such a result. Presumably he knows how to incite a riot if he wants to, so the fact that he hasn’t shows that he didn’t mean to.

“Mark Levin” suggests “there should be charges of TERRORISM leveled against the black panthers for the bounty they placed on Mr Zimmerman’s head AND Spike Lee for tweeting his supposed address.” The New Black Panthers have surely broken the law and I don’t understand why they haven’t yet been arrested and charged, but all Spike Lee did was spread some information which he (mistakenly) thought to be true. That is not a crime. There’s a first amendment in this country, and people have the right to speak their mind even if you and I don’t agree with them, and to make public information that ought in decency to be kept private.

If anything happened to that couple, or indeed to Zimmerman, Sharpton and Lee would be morally culpable, but I don’t see how they would have any legal liability.

  10. “send sharpton to a gate community and give him a bag of skittles.”

As I understand it, the claim that young Martin was carrying skittles and iced tea comes from the Martin family lawyer, and there is no evidence to support it. They are not mentioned in the police report. I suspect the lawyer just made it up to create sympathy for him.

  11. What I don’t understand or maybe I do is where are the voices and condemnation from the guy in the white house when a Rabbi and 3 children are needlessly assinated by a terrorist. I did not hear a peep from the bozo in the white house. Sorry about calling him a bozo but he is. He never knows when is the right time to speak. To those that say he did speak out and did condemn the assinations in France than please post the links not link but links.

As far as sharpton the biggest bozo of all why even waste commenting on a moron.
