UPDATE: Preparations for Atzeres Tefilla on Sunday in Full Swing; Tens of Thousands Expected in Lower Manhattan from Tri-State Area and Beyond

atzA broad spectrum of American Kehillos are participating in the Atzeres Tefillah which will take place on the streets of Lower Manhattan this Sunday.

The gathering will echo last week’s huge atzeres tefilla in Yerushalyim, which brought out hundreds of thousands of Jews in response to the Israeli government’s ongoing attempt at social engineering of the charedi community, including wholesale conscription of bnei yeshiva.

A Kol Korei signed by dozens of prominent Admoirim, Roshei Yeshiva and Rabbonim representing a broad spectrum of the chareidi tzibbur, urging attendance at this massive Atzeres, will be released within the next few hours.

The New York asifa will take place on Water Street in lower Manhattan – between Fulton Street and Broad Street – this Sunday, 7 Adar Sheni (March 9) at 2:00 p.m. It will begin with Mincha and followed by Tehillim and tefillos b’Tzibbur, led by Gedolei Yisroel. A special area for women is also being arranged.

The podium where the shaliach tzibbur will stand will be on the corner of Water Street and Old Slip (midway between Broad Street and Wall Street).

In anticipation and preparation of the Atzeres Tefilla, a Teleconference outlining the background and purpose of the Atzeres Tefilla, the participating Kehillos and Yeshivos, as well as the details regarding the logistics of the day’s events will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The call in number is 212.244.1323.

New York residents are being urged to take public transportation to the site, which is well serviced by the subway system with many subway lines stopping in the area. Organizers urge participants not to drive into Manhattan for the gathering. This applies as well to individuals driving in from points outside the city, who should park in Brooklyn or New Jersey and take a train into Manhattan.

Buses are expected to bring participants from communities outside the immediate New York area, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, upstate New York, Orange, Sullivan and Rockland counties, Lakewood, and other New Jersey communities.

Detailed maps of the area, with access points, bus parking areas, and the streets set aside for women will be released later this week.

The weather Sunday is predicted to be milder than what the East Coast is experiencing this week, with Accuweather forecasting temperatures in the low 40’s with calm winds.

There will be a significant security presence in the area, and the NYPD will conduct periodic sweeps before the event. Most major streets in the area will be closed to vehicular traffic and all participants will have to go through a security check before being allowed in. Organizers ask that attendees not bring knapsacks, briefcases or packages in order to keep lines flowing.

Hatzolah and Shomrim will be on hand.

In order to maintain the decorum and dignity of the Atzeres, police will not permit signs or placards.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

  1. A beautiful kiddush Hashem. It will hurt the israeli goverment to see they cantu pull off a quick one without getting extreme protests from Jews around the world. The goverment is loosing its image rapidly…

  2. There such a concept where the RBSH”O says “Atem B’Cheesem Bchia Shel Chinom, Ani Etain Lochem Bchiau Shel Doirois”.
It is very scary, to cry and complain, against the opportunity to take part in defending Am Yisroel. So now HKB”H is showing us, that, instead, Yidden might be drafted to fight for Ukraine.

  3. “police will not permit signs or placards.”
I don’t think so as per our constitution right people can bring any sign they want.

  4. Why is this not being held in Brooklyn? Say Floyd Bennett Field? Where it wont inconvenience those who don’t give two hoots about what Israel does with its own internal policies? Do you think Obama will now call Netanyahu and pressure him not to draft yeshiva students? This is better off in a Bais medrash. No one else but Chareidei Jews in Yeshiva cares. The world doesn’t care about the Jew. And to do such a thing to purposely shun and possibly ruin and undermine the Israeli government on the world stage only serves to embolden our enemies. Very shortsighted.

  5. dare i ask, why cant we have this in brooklyn? i dont get the idea of making such a public spectacle of ourselves. While we view an atzeres tfilah as a beautful and holy kiddush Hashem, im not so sure the umas holam look at us that way. Why cant it be in our own backyard? likewise i think the israeli atzeres should have been in geula , the kotel or bnei brak. what did we accomplish by inconveniencing so many people. our own people understand the inconvenience. can someone please explain

  6. Ader

Do you even know what those words mean? And in what context it was said?

Got that we have gedolim, and last I checked Ader is not on the list of gedolim.

  7. The non-Jewish reaction to this will be something along the lines of great, the Hasidics (all frum Jews are Hasidic to goyim) don’t even want to help to defend their own country.

Not that their reaction matters, but that’s what it will be.

  8. An easy option for those traveling from NJ is to drive to Staten Island, park by the ferry terminal at St. George (parking is free on Sundays) and take the ferry (also free) to lower Manhattan. The terminal is right near the asifa location, I think. The ferry ride is every half hour, and takes half an hour.

  9. 12,

Because it’s open with very little going on there on a Sunday. The last one, about 12 Years ago or so, was there too and all was well.

  10. Manhattan was chosen over Brooklyn so it will hurt the Israeli Government even more. And btw that’s a Huge Kiddush Hashem because for the very first time the Agudas Yisrael protesting against the Israeli government.

  11. What’s the problem with signs?

In Israel they had many signs.

Maybe they’re afraid that won’t be able to control the message?

How should someone know what people are protesting about? If it’s not a protest so why do it on the street?

    Can someone please explain.

  12. I would love if one of you could explain how exactly this is a kiddush hashem? I beleive it is just the opposite. I am personally against thedraft law and mmechanic Torah but I still beleive at a certain point we need to understand how things work it is important to have people sitting and learning and there is no I number that can determine that. However some responsibility towards the country needs to be taken as well it can not be so one-sided. There is zero reason one can not do the duties the government demands of every israeli and still learn if thats what he wants. This is not for life its for 3 years and if that’s all it takes and the rest of your life you can sit and learn then so be it. Work in an office, open a kollel on a base do something but absoloutly doing zero and expecting it to fly I dont even think g-d will help with that. I also agree with the issue of tzinius in the army and therefore not a proper place for abochur however that can be addressed. Bottomline we are jews and we know very well when we are just taking advantage of a system and this is no different would it be great to just sit and learn and not be bothered yes it would be but if you have an issue with country because they need you to help then leave the country, denounce your citizenship, oh wait but then you wont get the benefits..well that’s life make a decision.

  13. Ader says:

“It is very scary, to cry and complain, against the opportunity to take part in defending Am Yisroel.”

Nobody is against the opportunity to take part in defending Am Yisroel. Not even Satmar. If the IDF was a traditional army, dedicated to eliminating, yes killing, the enemies (chiefly Arab) of the Jews, there would be no complaints. However, today the IDF has forgotten about killing and is, as it has been for decades, a social organization dedicated to introducing its officers and soldiers to hedonism, sexual promiscuity, secularism, and reinforcing that message, under the guise of a defense force. They surely do a good bit of defending and nobody has any gripes about that. It is the rest of the package that alarms us and to imagine that our pure children should be subjected to that putrid influence does not allow us to rest.

Let it be a killing force, to dispatch our enemies wherever they be found, without compromise, without apologetics, us chareidim will not shy from that. But with a focus on an increased spiritual environment, as a function of fighting the wars of Hashem.

  14. To 17

    1. That’s what our leaders of pre WWII Europe, said, about moving to America, (Treifinne America). But once everybody came to the USA in masses, the whole environment of Yiddishkeit changed to the better.

    2. You seem to be distancing yourself from the talking points of the Gedolem, that our Learning is instead of the actual army service.

  15. To Akuperma who asked me the other day what my thoughts are regarding the matzav in E”Y:

See the response of #16 above. I agree totally and there is no need to repeat it. I HATE hypocrisy and will continue to point out that what you post is almost exclusively just that.

To #17- You state: “and is, as it has been for decades, a social organization dedicated to introducing…hedonism, sexual promiscuity etc…”. I would like to know exactly how many IDF soldiers you have interviewed and found this to be the case. I believe you are merely parroting what you read on sites like these. The IDF soldiers I know (my nephews and dozens of cousins who served in the IDF (mostly Hesder) are ALL shomrei Torah U’Mitzvos today. They never encountered ANY coercion to become less frum. You statement is sheker gamur!

To #1 above who stated that I am not even Orthodox, I posted a response the other day, but being that you may not have seen it I will repeat it here:

Of course I am not Orthodox! How could I possibly be, when my rebbe was R’ Yoshe Ber Soloveitchik for many years? (And I wear a kippah sruga!). With that in mind, perhaps you can explain to me the machlokes Abaye and Rava regarding yi’ush shelo meda’as? I would love to understand it from a really Orthodox perspective!

  16. 3#, #16, #19 are all correct, and write reasoned fact based opinions. Attacks on them by those who have stated it is a “beautiful Kiddush Hashem” to “hurt the Israeli government”, or that the purpose if the IDF is “not to defend the country, rather its to promote hedonism and promiscuity”, cannot even be taken seriously as they have no basis whatsoever in reality. Furthermore these types of rants are themselves chilulei Hashem, and may be compared for there disconnect from reality to “9/11 truthers”. Hashem Yerachem.

  17. Where is the gathering for thanking Medinat Yisrael for all the millions of shekels they’ve given to yeshivot over the years for learning Torah? Is that going to be mentioned at this protest as well?
