The Torah Learning Basic Law is expected to pass its first reading in the Knesset this week after the coalition reached a mutually agreed formulation.

Under the proposed wording, Torah learning will be defined as a “significant contribution” rather than “meaningful service.” Chareidi representatives say that, in their view, the essence remains unchanged, and that the legislation will serve to protect the Chareidi community from High Court rulings regarding the draft.
