Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is renewing calls for Iran to release an American journalist convicted of spying and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Clinton said Monday that Roxana Saberi is innocent of the charges and should be freed immediately.
The secretary’s comments came as Iran’s judiciary chief ordered a full investigation into the case a day after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked the top Tehran prosecutor to ensure that she is allowed to offer a full defense in the appeal.

Saberi was born in the U.S. and grew up in Fargo, North Dakota. She was convicted last week after a one-day trial behind closed doors.
President Barack Obama said Sunday he was “gravely concerned” about Saberi’s safety and well-being and was confident she was not involved in espionage.
