arielRosh Yeshivat Har Etzion HaGaon HaRav Aaron Lichtenstein Shlita has come out publicly against the deal between Bayit Yehudi and Shas in the race for new Chief Rabbis of Israel.

In an interview granted by the rav to Makor Rishon on the occasion of the rav’s 80th birthday, he explains that he is a friend of Rabbi Yaakov Ariel Shlita, citing the merit of having such a person serve as chief rabbi. However adds Rav Lichtenstein, “it is not kovod for the rav to be remembered for having been elected using a back door. I would not wish to see the rav remembered for generations in this way”.

Rav Lichtenstein supported by David Stav when the race began, before talk of Rav Ariel’s candidacy, and the rosh yeshiva feels Rav Stav is the best candidate for today. The rav explains that the nation and the Chief Rabbinate have both changed over the years and realizing today’s realities and the work that must be done by the Chief Rabbinate, Rav Stav remains his candidate of choice.

Rav Lichtenstein adds that Rabbi Stav is well aware that he is not on the level of Rav Kook or Rav Goren, or some others for that matter, “and morally speaking this is a wonderful thing.”

  2. I love this fake Frumkeit. Bashing one Rav because he’s this or that, the main thing is that he’s not like me, so I can bad mouth him.
And to the other guys – you think the Rav or Rav Goren, zichronam livracha, would allow you to talk like that about another Rav?!
If only YOU could reach their fingernails in humility!
