Hey,
Any suggestions for an Android app to stay updated on Jewish and Israeli news? Browsing the mobile websites on my phone is murderous…
Thank you
July 22, 2014 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #1024204☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYWN has a mobile site. They have an app too, but it’s basically the mobile site without an address bar.
July 22, 2014 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #1024205mobile246ParticipantYah, I saw that. I’d prefer an app that can aggregate all the Jewish sites into one list so I don’t have to bounce around to get my news.
July 22, 2014 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #1024206HarotzehbilumshmoParticipantWhy does the YWN Android app demand all those permissions, they want access to everything! I was not comfortable with that so I just deleted it. I don’t have a browser on my phone so I can’t use the mobile site

Wow, you are so right!! I didn’t even see all of those
– Identity
find accounts on the device
– Photos/Media/Files
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
test access to protected storage
– Wi-Fi connection information
view Wi-Fi connections
– Device ID & call information
read phone status and identity
– Other
receive data from Internet
view network connections
run at startup
full network access
control vibration
prevent device from sleeping
All of this to simply view a website !?!
July 22, 2014 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #1024208☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t think it requires any more permissions than any other browser. The app is essentially a browser set to YWN with the address bar removed.
July 22, 2014 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #1024210HarotzehbilumshmoParticipantI believe that it does. It may just be a browser without and address bar, but it was created as an app and the creator sets the permissions, and with Android you can’t even change them
July 23, 2014 1:38 am at 1:38 am #1024211frumist613MemberApparently I cannot post a link, but I use a free app called JFeeds (just search for that on the store).
I like that it collects news from multiple websites and show it to me in one list.
Also, it only requires an Internet permission. No personal permissions at all.
July 23, 2014 2:30 am at 2:30 am #1024212☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantJfeeds doesn’t require special permissions, but you read the articles on the sites, through a browser, which does require permissions, and it defeats the purpose as far the OP is concerned.
July 23, 2014 4:53 am at 4:53 am #1024213frumist613MemberI think the point made earlier was that YWN app requires an adundance of permissions for no reason at all.
Take ‘Device ID’ for example. No other browser apps that I found require this permission. In essence, the only permission really needed is the Internet permission. Why should a website need to know the contacts I have on my phone (Identity permission)?
As for your point about reading the article through the browser,
this is ok in my opinion. I too hate loading mobile sites. With this app I only have to enter to the exact page I want. Also, I trust that Chrome will not abuse the privileges I grant it. (Furthermore, even Chrome doesn’t require as many privileges as the YWN app does. Go figure…)
July 23, 2014 1:15 pm at 1:15 pm #1024214☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhat are you talking about?
Chrome requires 21 permissions, the YWN app 9. And Chrome requires the same identity permission as YWN, plus another one.
I’m not pushing the YWN app; I think it’s useless. But I think you need to get your facts straight.

Thank you. Your suggestion is perfect. I got the JFeeds app and really like it.
