Rav Eliezer Eichenthal ZATZAL

candle73.gifIt is with sadness that we report that passing of Rav Eliezer Eichenthal zt”l, former longtime menahel at the Gerrer Yeshiva Yagdil Torah in Boro Park, Brooklyn. Rav Leizer was niftar in Yerushalayim where he had lived for over 10 years since moving from Boro Park. He was 78.

Born in New York to Rav Efraim Fishel and Esther Eichenthal zt”l, Rav Leizer was raised in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.  He learned in Mesivta Torah Vodaas and later in Yeshivas Mir in Yerushalayim. He was a close talmid of the Chazon Ish, among other gedolim.

A respected mechanech, Rav Leizer served as menahel of Yeshiva Yagdil Torah in Boro Park from 1973 to 1993, educating hundreds of talmidim and serving as a source of guidance and support in areas of chinuch, in addition to being sought after for general advice and counsel.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Itta Eichenthal. Reb Leizer raised a beautiful family, and had hundreds of grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in Eretz Yisroel as well as the United States.

He had two siblings: His brother, Reb Yitzchok Eichenthal, and his sister, Mrs. Rechel Pressman, both of Boro Park.

The family in Eretz Yisroel is sitting shivah at the Eichenthal home on Rechov Hosheah, between Rechov Yoel and Rechov Yechezkel, in Yerushalayim until Wednesday morning, Feb 4.

Due to the time difference, the family in the United States are getting up from shiva a day earlier, on Tuesday Morning, Feb 3.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. 3 weeks ago, R’ Eliezer was walking home from a chasuna, and there were 2 cars parked on the sidewalk.
He had to step into the street to walk around the cars. A taxi did not see him in the Jerusalem night.
    R’ Eliezer was injured badly.
Many bones in his legs and his face were broken.
    He suffered a major concussion.
His face had to be stitched up.
But he survived and came home to his family.

Reb Laizer would have been 79 years old next Chodesh Menachem Av. He had a heart condition, but he was strong.

    This is his story:
He was an American boy, learning in Torah Vodaath.
When the Mirrer Yeshiva arrived in New York after escaping the Nazis, he spent time with them on Simchas Torah.
He danced with them, and was inspired by the bren for Torah.
He began to learn with these Seridei Aish of Mir.
Then the mashgiach, R’ Chatzkel Levenstein left to Eretz Yisroel.
R’ Eliezer’s father, R’ Efraim Fishel Eichenthal asked him if he would like to go to Eretz Yisroel to learn.
    It was 1949.
There was barely any food to be had in Yerushalayim in those days.
There were no transatlantic telephone services.
A letter took 2 weeks to arrive – because people traveled by boat, not airplane.
At 19 years old, he said good bye to his mother and father, sister and brother, and set sail to learn Torah, with no knowledge of how or when he would see them again.

Reb Laizer introduced his parents, and by extension the entire Eichenthal family to the gedolim of Eretz Yisroel.
    R’ Chatzkel Levenstein
    The Chazon Ish
    The Bais Yisroel
    and many, many more.

We were zoche to hear stories about these people… from his personal experience.
Reb Laizer saw and touched genuine kedusha.
He saw the chessed that was done in these homes, and the Torah that was learned and lived.
And he lived to emulate it, every day, for the rest of his life.

When Uncle Laizer came home from the hospital after being hit by a car, he was in a lot of pain, but his spirits were good.
There was a lot of healing that had to take place, in his bones, his face, and his head.
The family hoped and prayed that they would be able to share yet another miracle with their children and grandchildren.
    But Hashem had other plans.
On Wednesday afternoon, 3 Shvat, 5769, Laizer went up, to join his father and mother in yeshiva shel ma’alah.
    We will miss him terribly.

    Yehi Zichro Boruch.
