Hagaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein: Tragedies Will Stop With Start Of Winter Z’man, Limud Torah Will Protect Klal Yisrael

Following the rash of tragedies which befell the Chareidi community in Israel on Monday, including the deaths of a baby, yeshivah bochurim and young mothers, the Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh, Hagaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein said that the moment that the winter z’man starts, everything will be calm, according to a Kikar HaShabbat report.

“The moment the z’man starts we’re calm,” said R’ Edelstein on Tuesday evening. “After the terrible tragedies which happened yesterday – if we begin learning – then Am Yisrael is protected. It has the zechus of limud Torah and then, with the help of Hashem, there won’t be tragedies.”

  1. With all due respect, the Gemarah says Torah is only maygen “b’edan d’asik”.
But certainly not maygen for those who are not asuk in Torah.

  2. Does Hashem not give “advance credit” – for the Torah that will be studies when zman begins?

Is machshava tova mitzarfa l’maaseh not applicable to limud Torah, the intent to start learning?

Is the rest of bein hazmanim not part of limud, just as sleeping and eating for a ben Torah is part of his limud?

    I really don’t understand!

  3. Bein hazmanin is given so that learners can re-energize and re-charge for more learning. It is part of learning, just as recess is part of learning for yeshiva ketana students. If it is batolah, it would and should have been abolished. Bein hazmanim was created by Rosh Yeshivos and Gedolim, not by those seeking a break from learning.
