4:20PM EST: According to numerous media reports, a NYC crane inspector by the name of James Delayo, has been arrested on charges of taking thousands in bribes and falsifying numerous reports. According to CBS2 HD, he allegedly tampered with licensing exams by providing the answers for crane operator exams to a crane company.
Delayo is an assistant chief inspector with the city’s cranes and derricks division, is charged with collecting thousands of dollars in bribes from a crane company.
Officials tell CBS2, that Delayo’s conduct has nothing to do with the two crane collapses that killed nine people since March.
UPDATE 6:30PM EST: Mayor Bloomberg issued the following statement moments ago:
“We have zero tolerance for any corruption anywhere in City government, and when corruption appears in a public safety agency like the Department of Buildings, it is all the more deplorable. The Department of Buildings has made enormous strides in rooting out corruption over the past six years, but this case underscores that there remains more work to do. We are fully committed to eliminating all traces of the corrupt culture that long infiltrated the construction process, and I commend the Department of Investigation for its stellar work in this case. The arrest of this inspector is a good reminder to any City employee – or any private company – that bribery and fraud will be discovered and punished to the full extent of the law.”

Next door to me when the condo went up they cracked the other guy’s wall from the foundation to the top. Did they get a “Stop Work” order? NO.
They built without having to put scaffolding around the building despite complaints of falling debris!
They built over the property line onto my property. The inspector: “I didn’t see anything”. (probably never even showed, so how could he see?)
Etc. etc.
