Many Elevators at NYC Housing Fail Inspections

elevator2.jpgA study has found that elevators at several New York City public housing developments have failed thousands of inspections since 2004. The study by the Manhattan borough president’s office found high failure rates during inspections of elevators at the city’s 343 public housing complexes.

One of the worst failure rates was found at a 30-story complex in Manhattan where 11 people were trapped in an elevator for hours in February 2007. The elevators there failed all of the 75 inspections since January 2004.

Housing Authority spokesman Howard Marder told NEWSDAY that the agency hasn’t seen the report.

Manhattan borough president Scott M. Stringer plans to hold a public hearing on Friday in Harlem on elevator safety.
