Three Charged in Antisemitic Vandalism Tied to “Foreign Power”, French Authorities Say

French authorities have charged three Serbian nationals with carrying out a series of antisemitic vandalism attacks across Paris last weekend, allegedly acting “to serve the interests of a foreign power,” according to a judicial source.

The three men—two brothers born in 1995 and a third man born in 2003—were arrested on Monday in southeastern France while attempting to flee the country. On Thursday evening, they were formally charged in connection with coordinated acts of vandalism targeting Jewish sites in the French capital.

According to a source close to the investigation, the suspects had been in communication via Telegram with unidentified individuals who have yet to be apprehended. While the suspects reportedly carried out the acts in exchange for financial compensation, authorities believe they may have been unwitting pawns in a broader geopolitical agenda.

Investigators suspect Russia was behind the coordinated effort, though the Kremlin has denied any involvement—similar to its previous denials regarding a May 2024 incident in which red handprints were defaced onto France’s main Holocaust memorial.

Last Friday night’s attacks included the defacement of France’s Holocaust memorial, three Paris synagogues, and a Jewish restaurant with paint. The Israeli embassy in France condemned the incidents as a “coordinated antisemitic attack.”

The three suspects, all of whom had reportedly lived in France for several years, are being held as the investigation continues into possible foreign interference and a wider network of operatives.
