Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lashed out during a tense exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday, abruptly shutting down a question about insider trading allegations that have long shadowed her and her husband’s lucrative investment portfolio.

The confrontation came just hours after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee narrowly advanced legislation introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) that would bar members of Congress, along with the president and vice president, from trading individual stocks. The bill passed by a vote of 8–7, with Hawley casting the only Republican vote in favor.

Pelosi appeared on The Lead with Jake Tapper to discuss the 60th anniversary of Medicaid, but the interview quickly veered into heated territory when Tapper cited President Donald Trump’s latest remarks: “Nancy Pelosi became rich by having inside information.”

Before Tapper could finish reading the quote, Pelosi interjected sharply.

“Why do you have to read that?” she snapped. “We’re here to talk about the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. That’s what I agreed to come to talk about.”

Tapper pressed forward, asking Pelosi for a direct response to Trump’s accusation of insider trading.

“That’s ridiculous,” Pelosi said, dismissing the allegations outright. “I very much support the stop-the-trading-of-members-of-Congress [bill]. Not that I think anybody is doing anything wrong. If they are, they are prosecuted and they go to jail. But because of the confidence it instills in the American people… don’t worry about this.”

Pelosi went on to distance herself from the couple’s financial dealings. “I have no concern about the obvious investments that have been made over time. I’m not into it. My husband is, but it isn’t anything to do with anything insider,” she said.

Turning the tables on Trump, Pelosi accused him of deflection. “The president has his own exposure, so he’s always projecting. He’s always projecting. And let’s not give him any more time on that, please. We’re going forward here.”

After the exchange, Pelosi shifted the discussion back to Medicaid, slamming Trump’s proposed reforms as “cruel” and warning they could slash nearly $1 trillion from the program over a decade and leave 12 million Americans without coverage.
