America Tries a New Approach Regarding Iran

iranh.jpgAccording to a NY Times report, US President Barak Obama sent a letter to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, presenting an original idea. Obama states that if Russia agrees to halt all aid to Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, America is willing to cancel plans to deploy missiles in Eastern Europe, a move that is strongly opposed by Russia.

The president’s ‘secret plan’ was revealed in the Times, eliciting a negative Russian response, with Medvedev explaining the issues are not at all related and therefore, Russia will not comply. The Russian leader added that there is a new administration and if it wishes to reevaluate its defense needs and implement a new plan that is acceptable to the Europeans and Russia, then Moscow would be willing to evaluate such a possibility.

Obama was hoping the incentive, forgoing the placement of missile silos and radar in Poland and the Czech Republic for the cessation of aid to Iran would be welcomed by Russia. He hoped that the offer might persuade the Russians to join the western alliance, the United States, France, Germany and Britain in their efforts to halt the Iranian nuclear program.

The two leaders are planning to meet in London where they will be attending the G20 conference on April 2nd.
