Officials say Gov. David Paterson has signed legislation allowing “red light cameras” at dangerous intersections on Long Island in order to reduce accidents and generate badly needed revenue.
Nassau and Suffolk officials say the bill will raise about $3 million to $4 million a year in revenue for each county.
The red-light legislation allows counties to install cameras to take pictures of cars and their license plates as they zip through red lights at 50 dangerous intersections.
Officials say final locations will depend on consultants who will survey each sight.
The law calls for $50 penalties for violators.

The “” should have been place by the word “dangerous intersections” on Long Island… we all know its just another money making scheme from a man who is less popular than a triple parked car in boro park.
What’s the big deal?
One possible outcome is less people will run red lights on their way to the bathroom, or to lunch. The second possible outcome is the counties will make money off of these inconsiderate reckless idiots who put everyone else’s lives in danger.
Good for them. I’d rather a red light camera than another tax.
