Mumps Outbreak In Lakewood Connected to Brooklyn

mumps.jpgHealth officials say a mumps outbreak in New Jersey is linked to the recent outbreak in Brooklyn, reported Thursday by YWN.

Approximately 30 people in Lakewood, who range in age from 1 to 40 years old, have come down with the disease in the last two weeks, Fox reports.

The Ocean County Health Department says the cases have been primarily contained to one section of the township and some of those infected may have come into contact with each other. Health officials say most had been fully vaccinated against the disease.

Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and swelling of the salivary glands. Mumps can be spread through sneezes, coughs and exchanges of salivary fluid.

Shame on you. Don’t you understand that the entire idea vaccinating our kinderlach is an underhanded, left wing, socialist, Obamaville, anti-frum, and liberal conspiracy to undermine Torah.

On that note – During a Yom Tov seudah I had a curious exchange with a yungeman who’s in kollel in Lakewood, the son in law of a Yeshiva rebbe and rav.

He first royally trashed Obama and his idea of a “government” health plan – but then when I asked him what insurance he had for him, his wife and several children…get this…he told me they’re on NJFamilyCare, “…the State of New Jersey’s way of providing affordable health coverage for kids and certain low-income parents… ” (See http://www.njfamilycare.org/)

He gave no indication that he recognizes the irony, inconsistency and outright hypocracy of his positions. Go figure!

  2. YonasonW: So I assume that you are in favor of surrendering an enourmous amount of your personal freedom regarding health care, bankrupting the country for this generation and many generations to come, making millions of people even more desperately dependent on huge government bureaucracies, taxing others to death for your personal needs and a life of schnorring in general. Is that about right?

The mentality of dependency on others – the government, parents, in-laws, outlaws, whatever – is a terrible sickness that eats away at the soul and dignity of a person. I realize that there is a great noble purpose to find ways to make it possible for people to sit and learn, but we only need to look around to see, with the many social ills formerly unknown to the frum world, that it is not working very well.

  3. As told by my children’s pediatrician, many children who WERE immunized got the mumps..
I also heard from another source: that this mumps epidemic started when a kid went to london for a wedding, got the mumps where he was there (he was immunized), and went back to camp before it was discovered…

  4. #8 TownShrier – Boring, almost – Do some simple research . . .the same inaccurate and alarmist arguments were used 70 years ago by those opposed to the Social Security Act.

How pray tell would a national health care option take away your “freedom” any more than does existing Federal housing programs, Food Stamps, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SSI, student ais or anything else? Your frightened conclusory blast does not make it so.

  5. I had mumps in 1954 at age 3, and I still remember it – I recall painful swelling at the rear of the jaw, stiffining of the jaw muscle and a no-nonsense fever. I was bed ridden for several days, and the pediatrician made a number of visits (we had house-calls in thiose days) – even though my father was a physician and my mother a registered nurse. People took it seriously.

  6. How many people still do not understand the issue.

Most if not all the affected were vaccinated. It is either a different strain or the vaccine is less efective than we assume.
I am amazed at the charge sbeing hurled at those that do not vaccinate when this is not the issue.

  7. Obama’s insurance plan is not a good plan but an ill-thoughtout plan that is going to make insurance impossible than possible for many such as myself. Federal employees on BC/BS insurance received a 15% increase in their premiums. They received notification that if the Obama Health Initiative goes through, there will be another increase, at minimum, of 25%. That is a total increase of 40% in one year. Medical service is available on a sliding scale according to income for anyone who seeks such medical assistance. Most people just haven’t checked t out. It has been around for years, but…..nobody trys much to use it.

  8. Arc :dont be foolish I am from Pa my son is just getting over the mumps he is 14 and had 2 sets of the MMR vaccine one at 15 months and one in 2000 and still got them.He has been out of school for the past 9 days. It starts with pain in the jaw and within a hour you will see selling just below the ear and then spreads across the jaw(on one side or both)If you ever seen someone just after they had their wisdom teeth taken out thats what it looks like. His family doctor didnt even know he had them(he sent him home and had no ideal what was wrong) I had to take him to the ER

On the contrary those of us who are unfortunately on jersey care know exactly how Obama care or social medicine will end up like
I broke my foot about a year ago there was not one orthopedist in the entire state of New Jersey that would look at me because I had jersey care
If you would ask around you would hear countless horror stories from people that are on jersey care especially when it comes to needing a specialist
in saying that it would not be an irony inconsistent or even hypocrisy to say that it will be a disaster bec we are the ones that where the lab rats for this experiment and boy do we get burnt
ps I am not in kollel I work and just can’t cut it to afford my own health coverage even though that is my wish to be free of this social ill of government dependency let it be any were any way and anyone

If ignorance is bliss, you certainly are a happy fellow. Social Security is bankrupt, as is Medicare and Medicaid. Let me explain how, besides the fact that these programs are spectular wastes of money, they also deprive you, me and everyone else of our personal freedom: when I work a 40 hour week, I devote my time, energy and resources in exchange for a certain amount of money. In effect, I have given away the freedom to make other use of my time energy and resources, because I CHOSE TO DO SO. The money I receive represents the value I placed on my time, energy and resources. In effect, I have converted these precious things into money. Now, when the government takes that money away, they are stealing my freedom. Worse than that, in the case of obamacare, they will not only steal my money, they will compel me to use my money a certain way and limit my freedom of choices about how I take care of my health.

The same thing applies to Social Security and other programs: I am compelled to put money in a pathetically inefficient retirement program rather than choosing to invest the money myself. Once again, they are stealing my valuable resources and forcing me to do something I don’t want to do.

You may be among those who think the government has a magic money making machine in the basement of the Treasury Department and the government, in its largesse and boundless generosity, is simply sprinkling these magical dollars around the country and the world out of sheer goodness, with no cost to you or anyone else. These programs not only steal our money and freedom, they also sap the economic power of the country by funneling trillions of dollars through the behemoth bureaucracies that gobble up an enourmous percentage of the value, leaving little of the money actually helping people or creating any jobs or other lasting benefit.

I hope this lesson has not bored you, too much, Yonasan and that you will wake up and realize that it is only a matter of time before the country is absolutely bankrupt.
