Officials: U.S. Aware of Ft Hood Shooters Efforts to Contact al Qaeda

hasan2.jpgThe following is an ABC News report:

U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.

It is not known whether the intelligence agencies informed the Army that one of its officers was seeking to connect with suspected al Qaeda figures, the officials said.

One senior lawmaker said the CIA had, so far, refused to brief the intelligence committees on what, if any, knowledge they had about Hasan’s efforts.

CIA director Leon Panetta and the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, have been asked by Congress “to preserve” all documents and intelligence files that relate to Hasan, according to the lawmaker.

On Sunday, Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) called for an investigation into whether the Army missed signs as to whether Hasan was an Islamic extremist.

“If Hasan was showing signs, saying to people that he had become an Islamist extremist, the U.S. Army has to have a zero tolerance,” Lieberman told Fox News Sunday.

Investigators want to know if Hasan maintained contact with a radical mosque leader from Virginia, Anwar al Awlaki, who now lives in Yemen and runs a web site that promotes jihad around the world against the U.S.

In a blog posting early Monday titled “Nidal Hassan Did the Right Thing,” Awlaki calls Hassan a “hero” and a “man of conscience who could not bear living the contradiction of being a Muslim and serving in an army that is fighting against his own people.”

According to his site, Awlaki served as an imam in Denver, San Diego and Falls Church, Virginia.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that Major Hasan attended the Falls Church mosque when Awlaki was there.

The Telegraph of London reported that Awlaki had made contact with two of the 9/11 hijackers when he was in San Diego.

He denied any knowledge of the hijacking plot and was never charged with any crime. After an intensive investigation by the FBI, Awlaki moved to Yemen.

People who knew or worked with Hasan say he seemed to have gradually become more radical in his disapproval of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  1. A comment submitted on the day of the horrific massacre criticizing YWN for reporting that the shooter has a “Muslim name”:

Shooter has a muslim name? that’s so wrong… there are many racist white jew haters out there with “jewish” sounding last names. Whether or not he has a muslim last name is beside the point. I’m not a fan of the muslim people by any stretch, but this goes beyond the pale, even for YWN.

  2. Hasan = terrorist. Thus ends the debate. Well it really wasn’t a debate, a few apologists are trying to imply he had a mental illness from being called names or some ridiculous thing. Nope, seems it is black and white. He is a terrorist who yelled “Allahu Akbar” so he was in his frame of mind, the same mindset as other muslim terrorists.

  3. Is Hussein Obama still going to tell people who believe this was a terrorist act to “not jump to conclusions” ?? Outrageous.!!! This man is a terrorist !!!!

  4. What concerns me, personally, and I don’t know why, but the other Army soldiers who are Muslims serving in the U.S. military. I think the U.S. Government better investigate every single one of them, check their computers and make sure they are not also communicating with al Qaeda.

  5. The Army didn’t want to be accused of any extremist profiling because of this jerk’s nationality. Who cares? I believe the profiling was needed, and it seems intelligence and Army officials had knowledge of his beliefs. This guy should have been immediately taken out of service and should have been investigated. Looks like it is pretty easy to infiltrate the U.S. military and carry out attacks because our military is too busy worrying about being politically correct! In this day and age, that should not even be a consideration!!!! We should be protecting our own and not the enemy!!

  6. This tragic case is an illustration of the insanity of political correctness and “diversity” taken to extremesunder pressure from the Radical Left and such groups as the ACLU. IT IS NOT IMCUMBANT (sp) on the United States nor on the West as a whole, to commit suicide because of possible past political errors and failed strategies.

  7. This person to me is just another type of “sleeper cell”. The fact that he was still active in our Military with everything that was known about him is unacceptable. Political correctness in our country is to blame for the loss of those soldiers lives at Ft. Hood. Our brave men and women in the Armed Forces should at least be safe in their own country on their own base. Yes, men who have seen combat have “snapped” and done terrible things but this is a completely different situation. It sickens me.

  8. at least abc is reporting this guys terrorist links. cnn (communist news network) is still going with the hasan was a victim of prdjudice angle. its truly pathetic

  9. So is the mainstream media still going to stick to the line that he killed a dozen people because he suffered from post (pre?) traumatic stress disorder and because other soldiers were mean to him?

  10. Now, now. Our Dear Leader has asked us “…not to jump to conclusions” regarding the continued slaughter of Americans by Muslims. We must do as President Obama tells us to do. We must honor him with our actions. Janet Napolitano, President Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security, has also told us to be aware of White Americans who may harm Muslims. The Obama administration clearly has this situation under control. No worries.

  11. Obama tells everyone not to “jump to conclusions”. Just like he didn’t jump to conclusions when he said Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley acted “stupidly” when he himself didn’t have all the facts. Hasan is an Islamic terrorist, plain and simple. There are more than enough facts to support that statement. “Political Correctness” has reached unprecedented levels in America. Just stand by for the Obama “coverup” attempt. Professional courtesy?

  12. It makes you wonder exactly who the CIA is working for, doesn’t it? To accumulate this kind of information and not share it with is unbelievable. And, haven’t we heard the same kind of thing before? Besides that, who did this terrorist report to on base and why didn’t that guy notice the militant posture and do something about it before this disaster happened?

  13. Sleeper terrorists in the Army and CIA asleep at the wheel. But who can blame them for not doing anything since it has now become sport for this administration and congress to criminalize what they have done in the past to protect the nation.

  14. You know what really ticks me off? This guy had a muslim bumper sticker on his car and it was okay, even though he served for the UNITED STATES ARMY. Here’s the best part, my job at a major company made me take down a picture of the American Flag, because I might offend someone. This country is screwed…..

  15. how much longer are we going to put “tolerance” for this wicked, vile so-called religion-of-peace above the safety and security of our people? where is the birth certificate?

  16. Interesting how everyones over-sensitivity to not offend Muslims led to this attack. This man was a ticking timebomb and due to PC authorities did nothing. Even now the focus of many is to not jump to conclusions that radical islam had anything to do with someone attacking US soldiers while shouting “Allah Akbar”. That is so reactionary.

  17. So Obama’s head of the department of homeland security tells us that this person is not a terrorist, but a person with a few mental problems, but yet our returning soldiers and tea party goers should be placed on the terrorists watch list. So if one exercises their freedom of speech and speaks up against Barrack Hussein Obama’s policies is considered a possible terrorist and should be placed on the terrorist ‘list’ and watched, but one who shoots and kills soldiers on a military base has a mental problem and is not a terrorist but an unfortunate individual who was going through pre war syndrome.

  18. President Obama has asked us to not jump to conclusions about this Hassan fellow. Of course this is because jumping to conclusions about a muslim speaking against the US, and seeking contact with al Qaeda, would probably uncover other plots by Obama’s terrorist compadres. Obama’a own connection to a radical communist (Ayers and company, in the book Praire Fire) who wrote that he would need to kill 25 million Americans once he took control. This should not cause any conclusions to be “jumped on” either. Step back, there’s nothing to see here. You voted for this piece of garbage. You get what you deserve. A dictator in the process of creating his dictatorship.

This “jumping to conclusions” has got to stop, or it will mess up the “plan”.

    Have a nice day.

“Islam and socialism are not incompatible” Osama bin Laden

  19. HASAN was a victim of the prejudice because he kept preaching AGAINST United States to fellow TROOPS. The troops should have killed him a long time ago in a friendly fire incident. That would have saved the lives of troops. It is ridiculous to tolerate such people in the US military.

  20. #24 haifagirl – you hit the nail on the head. We are living in a real life “1984”.
History gets re-written, words get re-defined. Obama’s press secretary should be called the head of the department of Disinformation.
I strongly URGE everyone out there to pick up a copy of “1984” and read it thoroughly to know where the U.S. is heading!

  21. Wow – there is nothing for me to say. You’ve all said it so well.
It’s scary to think how many more nutcases are infiltrated in our army. There was a time when you’d see someone in uniform and feel safe – not anymore.
Look at the difference in Bush’s reaction to 9/11 and obama’s reaction to this. I wonder what Bush would have said now if he were still president. I doubt he would have joked around for the first 3 minutes and then told the country not to jump to conclusions. Obama is a joke of a president – actually worse than a joke – he’s scary.
