  1. YW Editor:

Thank you for posting this. (1) This reminds us that our fellow Jews are serving in the US military, and (2) hopefully, the pain we feel when a fellow Jew falls will remind us that all soldiers’ families, no matter their religious affiliation (or not) suffer when their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, fall in action.

I know that you eschew long posts, but I think that the following is worth the read: a fellow (with an identifiably Jewish surname) wrote in the Washington Post that his father and uncle visited him in the DC area, and he spent the weekend trying to obtain a photograph of his father smiling. He did not succeed until he took his father and uncle to the national WWII memorial near the Washington Monument. There, some young teenagers saw the older men and asked them, “Did you serve in WWII?” When the men, both veterans, replied, “Yes,” the teenagers said, “Thank you for saving our country.” The author wrote that from that moment on a smile did not leave his father’s face.

A modest proposal: many cities have local chapters of Jewish War Veterans. Perhaps YW readers can contact those local posts – there may be elderly veterans who could use a hand or a touch of chesed, or active duty soldiers who might enjoy a kosher care package or similar.

  2. I have a friend who is a Chaplain in Iraq right now and would love to here from you and receive Kosher care packages. Please feel free to contact Chaplin Shlomo (Andy) Shulman at [email protected] and he’ll give all the details.
Oh, and by he way, he is a good frum YID doing what he can.

  3. Kiryat Sefer Yid’s note inspired me to visit the Jewish War Veteran’s website for additional information. I found the following, and intend in the coming days to provide additional information (YW Editor permitting, of course) on how we can reach out to Jewish soliders. The following is a thank you note received by the Jewish War Veterans for care packages distributed to Jewish soliders overseas:

    To Whom It May Concern:

I received your care packages you sent us. I distributed these gifts to the Jewish soldiers here at LSA Anaconda, Balad, Iraq. It goes without saying since you and those in the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. know this already. But for the soldiers here, many deployed for the first time, knowing they are not forgotten by fellow American Jews boosts their morale, reassures them that they are doing an important job and increases their pride in being a Jewish soldier.

On behalf of the soldiers here at LSA Anaconda, thank you for your thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity.

    Sincerely,

    Mordechai E. Schwab
    1st MI Bn Chaplain

  4. This past Pesach, I became acquainted with Daniel Aghami Z”L the decorated Jewish American soldier who was recently killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He spent his Pesach holiday with his family in Florida and I was privileged to hear him address the congregation at Chabad of Boynton Beach where both his family and my family daven. He touched all our hearts when he spoke about his experiences as a Jewish American soldier in Iraq. He never hid his Jewish identity. On the contrary, he was proud to be a Jew and was respected for that. At the Kiddush in his honor, following the davening,I and many others told him how proud we were of him. He was truly a modern day hero. I am sure that we all feel pained when when any American soldier falls in war, but how much more so when the soldier is from our own community.

  5. Boruch Dayan Haemes. Another feather in Chabads cap. I wonder how they’ll translate this into fundraising dollars.

  6. cherryhill
what a calluous remark about fundraising at this moment? (They can learn from all the yisomin, almanos, lack of life insurance campaigns.)

  7. That this cherryhill guy is anti-Chabad, is quite obvious from all his brilliant postings, but that he could stoop this low, that’s amazing! And right before the 3 weeks too!

  8. cherryontop Most would think after shloshim would be a proper waiting time. Do you happen to be a frustrated fundraiser?

  9. I heard this on the radio news last week. Its a shame they don’t even mention that he was jewish. (ISRAELI RADIO)
