Jerusalem Cabbie Fined for Spitting at Fare

A Jerusalem taxi driver learned an expensive lesson. He was instructed to pay 4,000 NIS in damages to a fare for using foul language and spitting at her because she insisted that he turn on the meter.

The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ruled in favor of the passenger, fining the driver 15,000 NIS and compelling him to sign a form that if he is apprehended committing the same offense in the coming three years, he will pay an additional 5,000 NIS.

After getting into the taxi and beginning on their way, the woman realized the driver did not turn on the meter. When she asked him to turn it on, he stopped the car told her to get out, and began driving off before she could properly close the door. He then stopped, got out, and yelled at her, “You can’t even close the door properly” and then spat at her.

While Ministry of Transportation officials were still conducting an investigation into the incident, the driver visited the woman at home to apologize. She agreed to cancel the complaint, but the court refused to drop the indictment against him.

  1. Israeli cab drivers as often as not are criminals. The lack of crackdown on what really is a public outrage contributes to the considerable social corruption.
