PM Netanyahu – Everyone Must Serve

While there are difference of opinion among members of the Plesner Committee, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has released another message to show his support for “sharing the burden”, emphasizing “everyone must serve”.

Seeking to avoid a coalition crisis with chareidi parties, the prime minister has been maintaining a moderate position, opposed to personal sanctions against avreichim and adopting a relatively moderate approach to a new draft law as compared to other committee members.

The prime minister also supports permitting chareidim to postpone serve until age 22 or 23 to permit those who wish to strengthen their learning prior to serving to do so.

The Plesner Committee is expected to announce its recommendations for the new draft law next week.

  1. “We’re preparing for war, and it’s hard to know what to expect. What I’m positive of is that there will be a next round, and others after that. But I would rather opt for living here in continual battle than for becoming part of the wandering Jewish people. Any compromise will simply hasten the end. As I don’t intend to tell my grandchildren about the Jewish State in the twentieth century as a mere brief and transient episode in thousands of years of wandering, I intend to hold on here with all my might.” Yoni Netanyhu

    AMEN –

  2. What Netanyahu proposes in this article sounds like something the poskim should be able to work with. By the age of 23-24, most yungeleit should be ready to leave the yeshivah and start looking after their families. If the minority who really are dedicated to learning are allowed to remain, there should be no problem with the rest (who are not only more mature, but also usually married) doing military service. But it must not be imposed; they have to work with the yeshivos and kollelim to implement this.

  3. There is a halocho that says that if the intent is shmad, regardless of how successful it is, then one must even give up their life rather than change the color of their shoes.
This is definitely a factor in the equation that the poskim will need to work with.
