Reburial of Jerusalem Man for Kibud Av

On the night between Thursday and Friday, the eve of 14 Menachem Av 5772, chevra kadisha workers exhumed the body of a well known איש חסד ז”ל from the Sanhedria Beis Chaim and reburied him in Har HaZeisim, Chadrei Chareidim reports. Family members received permission from gedolei yisrael, including Maran Rav Elyashiv ZT”L, the report adds.

The niftar, who died young over eight years ago, was well known as a bal chessed in Yerushalayim, hachnasas orchim and for giving tzedaka anonymously. The family made its case before gedolei yisrael, explaining that even though the niftar requested to be interred in Sanhedria, after his levaya a women and other were buried near him, persons who during their lifetimes were not shomer torah and mitzvos, persons described as being far from yiras Shomayim. The family viewed this as a compromise to the kovod of the niftar.

A heter was obtained from the Shevet Halevy Shlita, HaGaon Rav Ovadia Shlita, the Gavaad Eida Chareidis Shlita and Rav Elyashiv ZT”L as indicated earlier. The latter gave his heter just days before being admitted to Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The question from the family was presented to Rav Elyashiv by Rav Bentzion HaCohen Kook and the gadol hador zt”l responded זוהי מצות כיבוד אב.

The niftar was reinterred in Har HaZeisim near the Admor of Zvill ZT”L and near his father, who was niftar in the last year.

According to a report, Rav Eliezer Berlind Shlita, one of the rabbonim close to the family, before closing the kever on Har HaZeisim the family placed a kvitel asking mechila from the niftar for the טלטול caused to him by moving him from one beis HaChaim to another.

Members of the Kehilas Yerushalayim Chevra Kadisha deny any connection with the event reported, and the director of the chevra, Chananya Sachor is quoted as saying “it was done without our knowledge or approval”.

A similar statement of denial was released by the Chassidim Chevra Kadisha.

  1. Thanks for letting me know what happened in my backyard! My window overlooks the cemetery and we were wondering what was happening late Thursday night, we thought there were grave robbers or something of the sort.

  2. So at the begining of the story, you note that the chevra kadisha was invovled. Only at the end do you note that the resident chevrei kadisha all denied involvement…

    Also please define this statement:
“a women and other were buried near him, ”
    A) is there an inyan not to be buried near a woman
    B) is the ‘other’ something other than a man or woman?
