Many Hilltop Youth Are IDF Worthy

Senior IDF Personnel Branch officers visited outposts in Shomron and spoke with 30 ‘hilltop youth’ in an effort to assist ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) agents in evaluating the threat level of the hilltop youths. After getting to know the 30 better, learning more about them, the decision was made to permit them to enter the IDF.

It was recently decided to better evaluate the hilltop youth found in Yehuda and Shomron vis-à-vis IDF service. These youths have basically dropped out of mainstream life, school and work, and have been viewed as undesirables by the IDF in the past. The decision is an effort to bring them back to a more productive mainstream lifestyle.

The troublemakers, the ‘Bardakistim’ (“ברדקיסטים”) as they are called were not taken in the past but the IDF decided to reevaluate them on a one-to-one basis. Regarding those accepted for military service, their commanders will not be informed of their criminal pasts. If they are cleared medically, most of the 30 will serve in combat units.

  1. Recruiting one group of largely orthodox Jews who are opposed to the government and might consider acting on those beliefs, just as they plan to draft another group of orthodox Jews who also oppose the government and are being conscripted under conditions where they perceive the army in a less than benign way. What happens when an army gives orders, and the soldiers decide not to obey?
