NY Gov Cuomo: NYers Grieve With Their Connecticut Neighbors; Says ‘Society Must Unify On Gun Control’

Top elected officials in New York said Friday’s elementary school shooting massacre in neighboring Connecticut should be the final wake-up call to crack down on gun violence nationwide.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the innocent victims — many of whom were young children — whose lives were claimed by this senseless and horrific act of violence,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Police say a gunman swept through the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Friday morning, killing 20 children and six adults. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was also found dead in the school. A 28th victim was found dead at another site. The school is about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

Cuomo said in a statement that society “must unify” on the issue of gun control.

“While we don’t have all the facts and our focus must be on the victims, this is yet another senseless and horrific act of violence involving guns,” Cuomo said. “We as a society must unify, and once and for all crack down on the guns that have cost the lives of far too many innocent Americans. Let this terrible tragedy finally be the wake-up call for aggressive action, and I pledge my full support in that effort.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been a vocal advocate for tighter gun control laws.

“With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it’s still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen. It has come to that,” Bloomberg said Friday in a statement released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group he co-chairs. “Not even kindergarteners learning their A, B, Cs are safe.”

Bloomberg said that after a number of mass shootings, it’s up to President Barack Obama to send a strong gun control bill to Congress.

“This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response,” he said. “My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever.”

  1. Time for me to say this:

He stole the guns from his mother, after killing her.

So gun control would not have helped unless his mother couldn’t buy guns. And having a homicidal son is probably a good reason why we would have let her buy a gun anyway.

  2. How about teaching values Mr governor you ever see religious people committing these massacres ? But as usual we would rather push an agenda rather than solve a problem

  3. Aha! Guns you’re concerned about but partial birth abortion which slaughters, in the most gruesome horrific way, over a million babies a year, – that, you encourage!!! after all, a “woman” has a “right” to “choose”, to murder her baby!!! Shame on you, Mr. Coumo!
