IDF Okays a Sneak Peek at Naval Training

In a rare move, the Israel Navy has opened its doors, albeit only for a peek, permitting the world to see a censored portion of a naval training event that involves a stealth submarine. In actuality, the Israel Navy submarines are among the most classified units in the military. It is known that the German-built subs have the ability to fire missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

Israel is about to receive its fourth submarine from Germany with a fifth on order.

The navy’s 102nd submarine training class graduates on Tuesday, 12 Teves 5773, ending the intense 16-month course. According to Captain Y., the course commander, the training is limited to young candidates seeking a unique challenge and feel that are willing to make a sacrifice while earning the privilege of serving in this unique unit.

Captain Y. explains that one of the challenges facing trainees is determining if they are capable of remaining underwater for 2-4 weeks in cramped quarters without getting into arguments while continuing to function without daylight and other conditions that we humans are accustomed to.

Inductees seeking to qualify to enter the program must have a 5-point mathematics, physics and English matriculation high school diploma.

  1. “involves a stealth submarine”

I don’t think so. Diesels are by definition not stealthy.

“It is known that the German-built subs have the ability to fire missiles armed with nuclear warheads”

I don’t think so, either. Torpedoes, maybe, but the subs are too small for missiles.

  2. Shazam/#1 – They are still “stealthy”. The diesel engines drive an electric motor that is very quiet. From Jane’s Defence: “The Dolphin-class boats are considered among the most sophisticated and capable conventionally-powered submarines in the world. Each Dolphin-class submarine is capable of carrying a combined total of up to 16 torpedoes and Ship-Launched Cruise Missiles which can be fitted with nuclear or conventional warheads”.
