NY Times: Israeli Intelligence Averted Disaster From Syrian Chemical Weapons

US President Barak Obama listened to Israeli intelligence warnings pertaining to Syrian chemical weapons, thereby averting disaster, the New York Times reports.

In November 2012, Israeli officials informed Washington that satellite imagery showed the Syrians were loading 500 pound bombs believed to contain sarin nerve gas. The intelligence information cited the bombs were located close to an air force base so if Bashar al-Assad decided to use the bombs, there would not be time to intervene.

The US president acted swiftly and in a “remarkable” showing of support, enlisted the aid of Arab nations, Russia and China, apparently all aware of the threat level resulting from the accurate Israeli intelligence reports.
