Winter Storm Dumps Significant Snow On Some NYC Areas

New Yorkers woke up to blanket of fresh snow Saturday morning, though the city didn’t get hit as hard as some parts of the northeast. Snowfall totals across the city generally ranged between 6 and 12 inches but went as high as 15 inches in some areas.

As of approximately 7 a.m. Saturday, 11.4 inches of snow was measured at Central Park and 12.1 inches of snow was measured at LaGuardia Airport.

The Fieldston section of the Bronx was reporting 15 inches of snow as of 5:15 a.m. Saturday. The Middle Village section of Queens also reported 15 inches of snow, as of 8:10 a.m. Saturday.

The Sunnyside section of Staten Island was reporting 12.4 inches as of 8:15 a.m. Saturday.

Sheepshead Bay reported 9 inches of snow as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

JFK International Airport was reporting 6.4 inches of snow as of 7 a.m. Saturday.

The Department of Sanitation sent out hundreds of salt spreaders and snow plows to remove snow from streets and highways.

The Department of Transportation sent de-icing vehicles to work on bridges and other main arteries.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that all primary streets, most secondary streets and 60 percent of tertiary streets have been plowed as of 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

Bloomberg reminded drivers to stay off the roads so plows could do their jobs.

“The message is, please, don’t drive. Stay off the roads,” Bloomberg said. “Our plows can go down the streets much quicker, and they can do a much better job, if they have a straight shot.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency to make it easier for the city to respond to problems caused by the storm.

On Saturday, Cuomo said that Bloomberg will send city resources to Suffolk County on Long Island, where snow totals reached as high as 30 inches.

Garbage pickup is suspended Saturday so sanitation workers can concentrate on snow removal.

Alternate side parking rules are suspended Saturday and Sunday, as well as parking meters and muni-meters.

  1. Note the power of the president. On Jan 21, Obama came out against global warming. It immediately got colder. On Erev Shabbos he showed off his powers, it snowed heavily over the northeastern coastal regions except for the Baltimore-Washington Area. This was to be expected since Democrats favor programs that benefit themselves, but always expect someone else to bear the burden.
