Hamas Leader Rejects Arab League Land Swap Proposition

meshalWhile Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and others are euphoric of a recent Arab League peace overture to Israel, Hamas leader Haled Meshal is not having any part of it.

The Arab League has announced that an Israeli retreat to pre-1967 boundaries is not set in stone and there may be room for compromise that would include limited land swaps. Meshal however is distancing himself from the Arab League proposal from the get-go, tell al-Jazeera that Hamas remains opposed to any compromise with Israel. In the interview, Meshal also rejected the “economic peace” plan of US Secretary of State John Kerry, with the latter working to infuse billions of dollars into the PA (Palestinian Authority) towards creating tens of thousands of jobs.

“We reject everyone’s initiative towards compromise and political concessions which work in Israel’s favor” Meshal stated.

  1. If an agreement was supported by the Arab League and Israel, the Palestinians would probably support it in a referendum, which the Arab League could call (and count the votes). There are many indications that the bulk of the Palestinians are much less warlike than Hamas. Also, the past has shown that Israel gains little be negotiating with one group of Arabs since they pay a high price (e.g. Sinai) and get only a little bit of peace. With a comprehensive deal, approved by the Arab League and the Palestinian people, Israel would get a more meaningful return for any concession.
