WWII Aircraft To Fly Over Statue of Liberty

solThe nation’s armed forces are getting an honorary salute — from historic U.S. war planes flying over the Statue of Liberty.

The flyover is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting.

The World War II planes are also to pass over the World Trade Center in advance of the Sept. 11 anniversary.

The formation of B-25 Mitchell bombers and wartime escort fighters is to leave from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, on Long Island. The planes will circle the statue twice.

The tribute was organized by the American Air Power Museum, based near the site of the onetime aviation complex that produced thousands of P-47 Thunderbolt planes fighting the German air force.

The flyover aircraft will be on display at the museum through Monday.
