6kg Baby Born at Rambam Medical Center

bThe staff in the newborn unit of Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center could not find a garment that would fit a newborn that came into the world earlier this week weighing 6.245kg (13.76 lbs). The child was delivered by C section in the 38th week of pregnancy. Nurses explain the weight of the young man is that of a half year old, not a newborn!

Prof. Shraga Belzer, who heads the hospital’s newborn ICU, stated it is the second largest newborn he has seen in his 35-year career. He explains 20 years ago he saw a 6.3kg (13.8 lbs) newborn while working in the United States. The newborn in Rambam is being monitored in the preemie unit.

The mother, Sivan Davush, 31, from the Golan Heights, told the staff the newborn’s brother and sister were also large, weighing in at 4.5 and 5kg at birth. She explains that she has juvenile diabetes and together with the drugs she takes results in large newborns.
