The glittering ball has dropped in New York City�s Times Square to usher in the new year.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor led the 60-second countdown and pushed the ceremonial button to signal the descent of the New Year�s Eve ball.
A sea of people from all over the world packed into the bow-tie-shaped stretch of streets in midtown Manhattan to see the crystal ball drop.
Many of them arrived 12 hours or more in advance to watch the festivities.
