Israel: Four Dayanim Appointed Temporarily

yyoAfter the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Supreme Court has been shut down for over a month, Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni on Tuesday 6 Shevat 5774 finally signed an order to appoint four dayanim in a temporary status. Alongside the justice minister’s signature is that of Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, the av beis din.

The four were tapped about three months ago and they were supposed to begin serving in their new post about six weeks ago but this was prevented by a decision by Livni. She wants to bring different dayanim to serve. Amid mounting pressure and a backlog of cases she finally agreed to appoint them in a temporary status.

The new dayanim are Rabbi Zamir, Rabbi Shachor, Rabbi Elchadad and Rabbi Gertler, two Ashkenazim and two Sephardim.

The justice minister Tzipi Livni did not agree to appoint those dayanim in a temporary status.
Actually both she and Rav Yitchak Yosef agreed to appoint temporarily four OTHER dayanim:
Rav Eliyahu Hishirick, Rav Aharon Katz, Rav Michael Amos, Rav Eliyahu Aberjil
