Accumulated Snow, Ice Add To NYC Sidewalk Hazards

icecEven before the latest storm, built-up ice and snow were posing a continuing hazard on New York City sidewalks — especially in the Bronx.

The New York Times notes that people without cars in that borough have been navigating some treacherous walkways that cross major roads, subway lines, bridges and hilly areas.

It says the elderly have been using canes like ski poles. Couples have been clinging to each other for balance. And straphangers leaving a subway station wobble while trying to find their footing.

The situation has led to some finger-pointing.

A Bronx hospital worker, Sidney Flores, says the problem has persisted since “the last storm” and “the storm before that” and “the one before that.”

  1. Actually, a pair of ski poles, especially the type used for cross country skiing, are a very helpul assist to the elderly in these snowy and icy conditions. A good pair of poles cost less than $100 and are very strong and lightweight and will provide safe mobility to elderly walkers in the most snowy and icy conditions. Perhaps the yiddeshe mosdos could arrange to buy and distribute ski poles and discounted prices to those senior citizens who don’t have easy access to a ski shop.

  2. Hatzalah is urging us all to clear and salt our sidewalks. Please lets comply !
Too many of our brothers & sisters are falling and injuring themselves.
    May Hashem bless you all.

  3. No. 1: Please clarify: are you kidding or serious? If the “yiddeshe mosdos” wants to be helpful, they could spend their money to cover the delivery charges and tips that would be payable for delivery of groceries to elderly people, sparing them the need to negotiate treacherously icy sidewalks.

A charity to distribute cross-country ski poles to the elderly of the Bronx? Are you a hip surgeon looking to drum up business?
