Egypt Cancels Indirect Talks in Cairo

Abdel Fatah al-SisThe Egyptian media has informed Hamas on Sunday 2 Marcheshvan that indirect talks involving the PA (Palestinian Authority) and Israel scheduled to resume in Cairo on Monday will not take place due to the mounting terrorism in Sinai. While the media has not mentioned Hamas by name, Egyptian officials are clear in their well-worded statements tying Hamas to the terrorism which over the weekend claimed the lives of t least 31 Egyptian security personnel.

Egyptian President General Abdel Fatah A-Sisi announced the terrorism in Sinai poses a threat to his entire country, blaming “outside forces” for their role in trying to destabilize the current administration. Sisi is not a supporter of the Hamas regime or senior command.

The scheduled talks were part of the ongoing efforts to achieve a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas following Operation Protective Edge, the IDF counter-terrorism offensive in Gaza.

Egyptian officials declared a three-month ‘state of emergency’ in Sinai in response of mounting terrorism in that area.
